SN 2.8: Tāyanasutta (Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma...)

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. Atha kho tāyano devaputto purāṇatitthakaro abhikkantāya rattiyā
abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami;
upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho tāyano devaputto bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

"Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma, / kāme panuda brāhmaṇa;
Nappahāya munī kāme, / nekattam-upapajjati.

Comm: Tattha chindā'ti aniyamitāaṇatti. Sotan'ti taṇhāsotaṁ. Parakkammā'ti parakkamitvā vīriyaṁ katvā.
Kāme'ti kilesakāmepi vatthukāmepi. Panudā'ti nīhara. Ekattan'ti jhānaṁ.
Idaṁ vuttaṁ hoti --- kāme ajahitvā muni jhānaṁ na upapajjati, na paṭilabhatī'ti attho.
Taṇhāsotaṁ: stream of craving, taṇhā is bhavanetti, the leader / conduit / channel of existence

Bhava (existence) continues to flow by influxes of kāmāsavā, bhavāsavā, diṭṭhāsavā, avijjāsavā.

Saṅkassaran'ti saṅkāya saritaṁ, "idampi iminā kataṁ bhavissati, idampi iminā"ti evaṁ āsaṅkitaparisaṅkitaṁ.
Ādibrahmacariyikā'ti maggabrahmacariyassa ādibhūtā pubbapadhānabhūtā.
Idamavoca tāyano devaputto; idaṁ vatvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā
padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi:

'Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma ... na taṁ hoti mahapphalan'ti.
Idamavoca, bhikkhave, tāyano devaputto, idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi.
Uggaṇhātha, bhikkhave, tāyanagāthā; pariyāpuṇātha, bhikkhave, tāyanagāthā;
dhāretha, bhikkhave, tāyanagāthā. Atthasaṁhitā, bhikkhave, tāyanagāthā ādibrahmacariyikā"ti.

Taṇhāsota
Taṇhā is bhavanetti, the leader / conduit / channel of existence
taṇhā ponobbhavikā: brings up new bhava again and again
taṇhā → upādāna → bhava
grasping of signs (saṅkhā, saṁ + √khā + ā) makes fabrications endure (saṅkhāra, saṁ + √kar + *a)
- na upeti saṅkhaṁ (cannot be defined (by any sign))
- papañcasaññāsaṅkhā (proliferation of concepts and constructs (of signs))
Bhava (existence) continues to flow by influxes of kāmāsavā, bhavāsavā, diṭṭhāsavā, avijjāsavā.
Not grasping of signs → asaṅkhataṁ, akataṁ
Right View ends taṇhā: dukkhe ñāṅaṁ, dukkhasamudaye ñāṅaṁ...
Taṇhā is the seamstress (sibbanī), joining and connecting seeing-and-seen, internal-external, here-there (See Nibbāna Sermon 33)

diṭṭhe diṭṭhamattaṁ bhavissati,
sute sutamattaṁ bhavissati,
mute mutamattaṁ bhavissati,
viññāte viññātamattaṁ bhavissati.... tato tvaṁ Bāhiya nev'idha na huraṁ na ubhayamantarena.
Es'ev'anto dukkhassa... then, Bāhiya, you are neither here nor there nor in between.
This, itself, is the end of suffering.

aṭṭhame purāṇatitthakaroti pubbe titthakaro. ettha ca titthaṁ nāma dvāsaṭṭhi diṭṭhiyo, titthakaro nāma tāsaṁ uppādako satthā. seyyathidaṁ nando, vaccho, kiso, saṁkicco. purāṇādayo pana titthiyā nāma. ayaṁ pana diṭṭhiṁ uppādetvā kathaṁ sagge nibbattoti? kammavāditāya. esa kira uposathabhattādīni adāsi, anāthānaṁ vattaṁ paṭṭhapesi, patissaye akāsi, pokkharaṇiyo khaṇāpesi, aññampi bahuṁ kalyāṇaṁ akāsi. so tassa nissandena sagge nibbatto, sāsanassa pana niyyānikabhāvaṁ jānāti. so tathāgatassa santikaṁ gantvā sāsanānucchavikā vīriyappaṭisaṁyuttā gāthā vakkhāmīti āgantvā chinda sotantiādimāha.

"In the eighth [verse], 'purāṇatitthakara' means a former founder of a sect. Here, 'tittha' refers to the sixty-two [wrong] views, and 'titthakara' means a teacher who originates these views. For example, [teachers like] Nanda, Vaccha, Kisa, and Sankicca. The followers of these views are called 'titthiyas' (sectarians).
Now, how was he reborn in heaven after establishing [such] a view? Through his belief in kamma (action). It is said that he gave offerings during Uposatha days, established support for the destitute, built shelters, had ponds dug, and did many other meritorious deeds. Due to the results of these actions, he was reborn in heaven, and he came to know the liberating nature of the Buddha's teaching. Having gone to the Tathagata, thinking 'I will speak verses appropriate to the teaching concerning effort,' he came and spoke [the verse] beginning with 'chinda sotaṁ' (cut the stream).\"

"Here, 'chinda' (cut) is an indefinite command. 'Sota' (stream) means the stream of craving. 'Parakkamma' means having made an effort, having applied energy. 'Kāme' refers to both defiling sensual pleasures and objects of sensual pleasure. 'Panuda' means to remove. 'Ekatta' means jhāna (meditation absorption).
This is what is meant: A sage cannot enter or attain jhāna without abandoning sensual pleasures.
'Kayirā ce kayirāthena' means if one should make an effort, one should make it, that effort should not slacken. 'Daḷhamenaṁ parakkame' means one should make it firm. 'Sithilo hi paribbājo' means a loosely practiced religious life. 'Bhiyyo ākirate rajaṁ' means it scatters even more dust of defilements above.
'Akataṁ dukkaṭaṁ seyyo' means it is better not to do wrong. 'Yaṁ kiñci' means not only having done wrong in religious practice, but whatever else is done loosely is also like this. 'Saṁkiliṭṭhaṁ' refers to difficult ascetic practices. In this teaching, ascetic practices undertaken for the sake of requisites are indeed defiled. 'Saṅkassaraṁ' means remembered with suspicion, as in "this must have been done by him, and this too" - thus doubted and suspected. 'Ādibrahmacariyikā' means fundamental to the holy life of the path, being the preliminary effort. This is the eighth [verse].\"
