The Authenticity of the Early Buddhist Texts

The Authenticity of the Early Buddhist Texts by Bhikkhu Sujato, Bhikkhu Brahmali (PDF)
p.70, Section 4.2.2, example of the development of sutta vocabulary over time:
Sutta form → early Abhidhamma analysis → full Abhidhamma analysis

MN 10 / DN 22:

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

kāya 1.1 (masc) body; physical body; physical process
kāyānupassī (adj) observing the body; who watches the body [kāya + anupassī]
vineyya 1 (ger) removing; putting aside [vi + √nī > ne + *ya] ger of vineti
abhijjhādomanassa (masc) wanting and unhappiness; craving and aversion; [abhijjhā + domanassa]

The tone is direct, and practical. The vocabulary is plain: ātāpī (ardent), sampajāno (fully aware), satimā (mindful). The sentence is structured to be heard, recited, and applied.

Suttanta-bhājanīya ("Sutta analysis") of the Vibhaṅga:

Idha bhikkhu ajjhattaṁ kāye kāyānupassī viharati
bahiddhā kāye kāyānupassī viharati
ajjhattabahiddhā kāye kāyānupassī viharati
ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

The core formula is identical, but an analytical expansion has been inserted due to an effort to systematize.

Abhidhamma-bhājanīya ("Abhidhamma analysis") of the Vibhaṅga:

Idha bhikkhu yasmiṁ samaye lokuttaraṁ jhānaṁ bhāveti niyyānikaṁ apacayagāmiṁ diṭṭhigatānaṁ pahānāya paṭhamāya bhūmiyā pattiyā vivicceva kāmehi ...pe... paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati dukkhapaṭipadaṁ dandhābhiññaṁ kāye kāyānupassī, yā tasmiṁ samaye sati anussati sammāsati satisambojjhaṅgo maggaṅgaṁ maggapariyāpannaṁ --- idaṁ vuccati "satipaṭṭhānaṁ". Avasesā dhammā satipaṭṭhānasampayuttā.

The instruction has been converted to a definition. A monk practising mindfulness has been replaced by an abstract analytical schema:

On the occasion when (yasmiṁ samaye) a monk develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttaraṁ jhānaṁ) that is emancipating, leading to dismantling, for the abandoning of views, for the attainment of the first stage... This is called satipaṭṭhāna. The remaining dhammas are associated with satipaṭṭhāna.

Vocabulary that is either unknown to the EBTs or used in a new sense:

yasmiṁ samaye: "on the occasion when" (the Abhidhamma's signature framing device)
lokuttaraṁ jhānaṁ: "supramundane jhāna" (an Abhidhammic category absent from the suttas)
paṭhamāya bhūmiyā: "the first stage" (in the technical Abhidhamma sense)
avasesā dhammā satipaṭṭhānasampayuttā: "the remaining dhammas associated with satipaṭṭhāna"
